Planning: Sound

Introduction:

Sound is very important when creating a film as it is i think it is the most important when making a film, because it enhances everything that the audience can see visually. This is because it sets the whole mood and ambiance of the films. I believe that sound is very important to plan out the sounds that we will use in the thriller, simply because the sound and cause the film to be more interesting with sound and what this also does, is allow the audience to be connected with the film or the actors to feel for them.

Some of the conventional uses of sound in thrillers are:

Non-diegetic soundtracks which are voice overs, this can be used to explain to the audience an event that happened or could happen within the scene that hasn't been shown to the audience. This allows the audience to create a better understanding of what is happening/ what happened. Also using this helps create suspense and trill emotion as the audience will be able to determine what will happen next in the scene. e.g. someone going to be kidnapped ETC.

Diegetic sounds such as radio's and TVs allow the audience to see and understand what is going on in the scene in a more clearer understanding; as this can be said to be based upon realistic sounds, this makes the scene more interesting for the audience to watch.

Off-screen sounds are to help build suspense and tension towards the audience such as footsteps, smashing windows ETC.

The sounds I plan to use in my thriller consist of the following:

1 - Non-diegetic, within my thriller this would be evident in the beginning of the film. As it starts off with the sound track playing and nothing shown to the audience. Also another scene where this is evident is when the boyfriend is at the house texting, in the background you can hear the TV playing. We do this in our thriller because it allows the audience to feel as the scene is more realistic because of what the characters are doing.

2 - Diegetic sounds are when the audience see the character playing the PlayStation 3. We do this in the thriller because it allows the audience, to become more intrigued into the thriller as it makes it more realistic towards the audience. With doing this, in the thriller genre it is more conventional as it most thrillers strive to make the film more realistic so that the audience have more of an impact that just watching a film, but actually believing in it.

3 - Off Screen sounds, is when we will use it beginning at the opening as the you will be able to hear loud walking. We choose this because, it is conventional to the thriller genre as it builds tension and suspense towards the audience. With doing this it allows the audience to wonder and guess what is going on in the thriller.

  1. Good planning of some of the sounds you will use within your thriller and why you have chosen to use them. This is however not complete.

Try and include at least 5 of your best examples of sound.
